Let me take you back, way back, back into time…the year was 2004 and in August Hurricane Charley was wreaking havoc on the southeastern portion of the United States.  And on Friday the 13th, two crazy kids took some vows.  Honestly, I can’t remember exactly what those vows were but there was love listed.  So we did.

For our anniversary we decided to visit a place neither of had been.  Hawai’i.  Our nation’s 50th state and one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen, was such a joy to visit.

 

And as you may guess, my favorite thing to do when visiting a new place is to check out local foods, farms, markets and even stopping at trucks and stands on the side of the road!  So imagine my absolute JOY when I came across Kona Salt Farm and found out they do daily tours!  

 

Excited doesn’t even begin to cover it!

 

Exploring the Kona Salt Farm

 

Ideally located on the beautiful coast of the Big Island, the Kona Salt Farm is a hidden gem that every food lover should experience. This isn’t just any salt farm—this is where the Pacific Ocean meets Hawaiian tradition, science, and culinary art. The farm uses a unique process that involves deep ocean water, sourced from 2,200 feet below the surface, to create some of the purest and most mineral-rich salt you can find.

 

During our tour, we were guided by the knowledgeable and passionate Ipolani, who made the entire experience unforgettable. She walked us through the fascinating science behind the salt-making process, explaining how the ocean water is carefully harvested and naturally evaporated to produce beautiful, glistening salt crystals. I was particularly intrigued by the different types of salt they produce, each with its own unique flavor profile and mineral content.

The Science Behind the Salt

 

One of the things that struck me most was the deep connection between the land, the sea, and the science involved in creating Kona Salt. The salt is rich in minerals like Magnesium, which plays a crucial role not only in flavor but also in our overall health. For those of you who don’t know, Magnesium is a powerhouse mineral—essential for muscle recovery, deep sleep, and even maintaining healthy blood pressure.
