Everything you ever wanted to know about Blue Crabs & a little that you didn't

🦀 Blue Crabs, My Forever Flavor Fix 🦀

💛💛💛💛💛💛💛💛

Let me tell you something! There is NO food on 🌎 I love more than blue crabs.

None.

Not even close.

If I’m near the water, you can bet I’m already scouting where to get some. Doesn’t matter the coast, the country, or the time of day—if there’s a crab shack, fish market, or somebody with a cooler and a good reputation, I’m pulling up.

And while I’ll happily hunt for crabs wherever I go, the Chesapeake Bay is the blueprint. These briny, sweet, feisty little crustaceans are a whole vibe, and if you’ve never had a proper blue crab feast, I’m gonna need you to fix that ASAP. ✨

Why the Bay Hits Different 🌊

The Chesapeake Bay isn’t just a pretty place; it’s home to one of the most iconic seafood traditions in the U.S. The blue crabs here grow up in this perfect mix of salty and fresh water, which gives them a flavor that’s unmatched. It’s sweet, it’s delicate, it’s buttery without ever needing butter. 🤤

Crabbing is a whole way of life here. Folks wake up before the sun, drop their pots, and come back with the freshest catch you’ve ever seen. And trust me, when they say “fresh,” they mean it—you can literally see the steam coming off a crab that was swimming this morning. 🛶

Steamed, Not Boiled— (No shade to the boil crowd, but for me, it’s all about the steam)

Let’s be clear: we steam crabs. Always have, always will. None of that boil-in-seasoning business over here—we’re trying to taste the crab, not cover it up. 💁🏾‍♀️

But I will NOT yuck someone's yum.  And the cousins down in Louisiana and some South Carolinians prefer to boil their crabs and that's fine. I mean, it's not my first way to cook them but I never say no to freshly cooked crabs soooooooooooo

Here’s the move:

  • Start with a big ol’ pot and a steamer basket 🍲

  • Add malt liquor (yep, trust me) 🍺 & a little water

  • Fill that pot with crabs  🔁

  • Sprinkle with seasoning—JO #2 is the Chesapeake classic, but if you’re like me, maybe you’ve got your own go-to blend (👀 Garlic Dust, anyone?) 🧄✨

  • Lid on, steam until they’re sunset-orange and smell like summertime and joy 🌇🧡

Let’s Eat, But Make It an Experience 💅🏽

There’s no graceful way to eat blue crabs—and that’s the point. This is messy, hands-on, laugh-out-loud eating. Layer the table in newspaper, hand everyone crackers and a good attitude), and get to cracking.

Start with the claws—big rewards, minimal effort. Then open the shell, clear out the inedible bits (you’ll know them when you see them), and get into that lump meat like your life depends on it. Don’t rush. This is a slow, sacred kind of feast. ⏳🙏🏽

My ideal setup? Crabs. hot, salty fries🍟 an ice-cold Mountain Dew or Pepsi. Maybe some corn on the cob for balance🌽.  And people I love gathered around, all too busy eating to check their phones. That’s luxury to me. 👑

Respect the Crab, Protect the Crab 🌍

If you’re gonna chase crabs like I do, make sure you’re supporting folks who harvest them right. Look for domestic, sustainably caught blue crabs—ideally straight from the Chesapeake, Atlantic waters or the Gulf. It’s about keeping the ecosystem healthy and getting the best quality. ✅🦀💚

Final Word? Find the Crabs, Always 💯

Blue crabs are more than just food for me—they’re the reason I started cooking, the reason I started my business, and honestly, the reason I travel the way I do. They’re home on a plate. And they’re worth the hunt. 🌍🍽️💖

So wherever you are, if you see a body of water, ask yourself: Can I get some crabs here? And if the answer is yes… go get ’em. Your taste buds will thank you. 🙌🏽🧡🦀
